Wellwood Center offers easy walking on trails that pass through a variety of ecological communities characterized by willow, balsam poplar, aspen, and white spruce. A foot bridge affords a crossing over a meandering stream. The path follows the ridge of an ancient river shoreline, connecting at its southern end with a trail system that goes for miles along the spectacular gorge of the Tonsina River. Walkers can keep alert for magnificent views of the Chugach and Wrangell Mountains, and for wildlife signs, birds, and many species of wildflowers and other flora of the primal subarctic forest. Some of the best views are to be found in winter when, depending on snow conditions, the trails are accessible on foot, skis, or snowshoes.
