Learn in depth about the natural history of Alaska's Copper River Basin with an experienced naturalist as your guide. Walk through a wild boreal forest, along a winding stream. Observe the signs and ecological effects of wildlife, such as beaver, moose, bear, and birds of prey. Learn to identify Alaskan wildflowers and other plants, and discover how they have been used by humans for food and for healing. Investigate the powerful, on-going forces within the earth that have formed the mountains, volcanoes, and rivers of this vast land. Become acquainted with some of the main human characters in the cultural history of the area, and learn how their activities have changed the nature of Alaska's Copper River region.
   

Talk and Walk is offered during June,
July, and August on Sundays and
Wednesdays, from 1 to 4 pm. Special
scheduling may be arranged on request.

Each Talk and Walk is unique, but will feature many of the following:
• easy walk through a natural and scenic woodland
• visit to a rustic wall tent for part of the program
• geologic perspective on the origins and current forces
x shaping the dramatic features of Alaska's Copper River Basin
• investigation of unusual characteristics of Alaska's subarctic
x ecosystem and how these affect the creatures that live here
• the important role of salmon to life in Alaska's Copper River Valley
• observation and identification of wildflowers, especially those
x currently in bloom
• observation of animal signs and traces in the natural environment
• animal, plant, and geologic specimens for hands-on inspection
• features and importance of ancient Lake Ahtna
• cultural, historic, and environmental perspectives on human
x habitation in the Copper River region of Alaska
• appreciation for the natural grandeur and wonders of the area
• questions and discussion on topics of individual interest
